Everybody knows Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are making a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, even if it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. The prospect of the sequel not happening is about zil to none, though at this point it’s looking like it might take a while. Likewise, Johnny Depp is definitely coming back as Jack Sparrow, even if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not. So what about Gore Verbinksi, the director behind all three “Pirates” films? Ol Gore was talking about coming back too, but he has now officially announced that he’s done with the “Pirates” movies.
Variety reports that Verbinski has told Bruckheimer and Disney that he’s off “Pirates 4″, saying:
“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”
Instead of Pirates 4, Verbinski will be finishing up his “Rango” CG movie (also with Depp) and returning to the oceans (of sorts) for his videogame movie “Bio Shock”.
For “Pirates 4″, many predicts a solo adventure for everyone’s favorite effeminate Captain. And possibly a brother. Or an evil twin. Or hey, why not evil flying monkeys? Those are always fun. At this point in the franchise, they could have Jack Sparrow fighting Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and we wouldn’t bat an eye at the silliness of it all.
