Verbinksi is Officially Jumping Ship on Pirates 4

Everybody knows Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are making a “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″, even if it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. The prospect of the sequel not happening is about zil to none, though at this point it’s looking like it might take a while. Likewise, Johnny Depp is definitely coming back as Jack Sparrow, even if Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not. So what about Gore Verbinksi, the director behind all three “Pirates” films? Ol Gore was talking about coming back too, but he has now officially announced that he’s done with the “Pirates” movies.

Variety reports that Verbinski has told Bruckheimer and Disney that he’s off “Pirates 4″, saying:

“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

Instead of Pirates 4, Verbinski will be finishing up his “Rango” CG movie (also with Depp) and returning to the oceans (of sorts) for his videogame movie “Bio Shock”.

For “Pirates 4″, many predicts a solo adventure for everyone’s favorite effeminate Captain. And possibly a brother. Or an evil twin. Or hey, why not evil flying monkeys? Those are always fun. At this point in the franchise, they could have Jack Sparrow fighting Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and we wouldn’t bat an eye at the silliness of it all.

Below: Hey, Jack, you seem to be running out of friends there, chief…

Johnny and Geoffrey Rush are a must. I don’t care of there is no Will or Elizabeth. All I do know as long as they keep making them, I will keep watching them.

I think the movie will do just fine with or without Will or Elizabeth. Sparrow is what makes the movie. Without Sparrow there wouldn’t be POTC.

I totally agree with you Naomie. While it would be kinda nice to see will and elizabeth back, and it would add a romantic element into the plot, Sparrow makes the movie. He’s the center of the entire franchise.

Yes, I also agree it would be nice to see Will and Elizabeth back. I did enjoy the romance here and there but I mainly watch for Jack Sparrow. He makes me laugh my arse off lol. I for one would also love to see Barbossa too.

I believe that as many characters as possible that were in the 3rd movie should be back. They left several paths to take for the 4th movie from the ending of the 3rd. Whatever road they take however, it seems reckless to just totally exclude 2 of the main characters from the 4th movie. At least wrap the Will and Elizabeth thing first before you discard them. Don’t leave the 3rd to end with so much unfinished business. Sequels that don’t present the same characters (or same actors for those characters) have a history of being a flop. I hope they change their minds about having just some of the cast back…at least until the story lines have closure.

How much more “wrapped” do you want them to be? They got married, she got knocked up, she had a kid, he’s the captain of the Flying Dutchman, and she’s the King of Pirates. I think that’s pretty damn “wrapped”.
