Very First Teaser for Donnie Yen’s The Monkey King

The Monkey King (2012) Movie ImageSure, “Dog Bite Dog” director Soi Cheang’s “The Monkey King” might be a year and some change away from hitting theaters, but that hasn’t stopped the promotional machine from unleashing a teaser trailer to get you pumped and prepared for the splendor to come. Although there’s no actual footage from the production in the clip you’re about to watch, getting a look at all of the talent associated with this very interesting project is reason enough to keep this flick on your cinematic radar. Granted, this could always be a case of too many cooks in the proverbial kitchen, but I’m more than willing to give Donnie Yen and his impressive team the benefit of the doubt. You’ll see what I mean in a minute.

“The Monkey King”, which stars Donnie Yen, Donnie Yen, Aaron Kwok, Chow Yun-fat, Peter Ho, Faye Wong, Cecilia Cheung, Kelly Chen, and Gigi Leung, is scheduled to go bananas in 2012. Thanks to Film Smash for providing all of the goodies.

Todd was raised on a steady diet of Hollywood blockbusters, late-night Cinemax programming, and USA’s “Up All Night,” which may explain why his taste in movies is more than a little questionable. When he isn’t providing news and reviews for Beyond Hollywood, he can be found lounging lazily on his couch, perched in front of his television, or dwelling in places where direct sunlight can be easily avoided. He's happily married, in his 30's, and totally badass. If you'd like to reach Todd, you can follow him on Twitter or send him email/scoops to todd (at) beyondhollywood.com.

The ensemble looks amazing. Looks like it’s going to be a live action version of “Havoc in Heaven”. I loved the original 1961 cartoon. There’s a ton of bad-ass action sequences, it’s going to be tough to pull them off with special effects.

really fan of donnie yen, but, with the amount of ‘megastars’ in this movie, i’m afraid it’s gonne be a bad movie :S

They Have a great US Team for The Monkey King (Visual Effects) David Ebner , (Makeup) Shuan Smith, (Producer) Michael Wehrhahn . The Collaboration of the Two Production Companies Global Star Production and Beijing Studios is a good team! This should be some great movie magic. I cant wait to see this trilogy.

I’m not so much concerned with the cast as I am with the flow of the story. There’s so much time jumping and a lot to cram into a movie if they’re doing the monkey king’s origins and havoc in heaven. Although since they’re doing it as a trilogy, I could see the first film being a framework story of the monkey king explaining his past to Xuanzang sometime around their meeting. Time jumping wouldn’t be an issue as much if its explained through framework instead of straight real-time. I’m excited to see them finally put this into the lime light of modern movies. Go Monkey King!
