So now we know how Vin Diesel will fit into Marvel’s plans — the “Fast and Furious” star is officially in talks to play Groot in James Gunn’s upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy”, which is currently shooting over in London. (Check out some set pics from the movie below.)
Deadline quotes unnamed sources in their article, but Diesel himself recently posted a picture of the Groot character on his Facebook page to his millions upon millions of fans, though he didn’t provide a caption with the picture. And because Diesel has posted previous Marvel comic book panels before when he was hinting that he would be joining the Marvel stable, perhaps most people didn’t really know how to take the picture of Groot.
So who (or what) the heck is Groot? Groot is a sentient tree alien (pictured left) who joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, which will include Chris Pratt as the human leader, Zoe Saldana as an alien assassin, Dave Bautista as another alien assassin, and a space raccoon. Yes, I said a space raccoon.
Depending on how Gunn and company decide to shoot Groot, this could just be voice work by Diesel. But if it’s mo-cap work, then he would definitely show up on set. If it’s the former, then he has experience, having previously voiced “The Iron Giant” over 14 years ago.
I have to admit, as big a star as Diesel is, the fact that he’s only voicing a character in “Guardians of the Galaxy” is a bit of a disappointment. I assumed he would have a bigger role in the Marvel Universe, like say, along the lines of Vision in Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers 2” or perhaps Thanos in “Guardians”.
In any case, “Guardians” fights the good fight in 2014.
