Hershel’s Farm is definitely going to be figuring prominently into “The Walking Dead” Season 2, and to get ready for a trip to the farm, AMC has begun stocking up on actors to fill out Hershel Green’s brood of survivors. Actor Scott Wilson has officially landed the role of Hershel Greene, while former “Supernatural” actress Lauren Cohan will play Maggie, Hershel’s daughter, and future love interest for Steven Yuen’s Glenn.
Casting for the Hershel homestead started earlier in the week with news that Pruitt Taylor Vince had been cast as Otis, another survivor who calls Hershel’s Farm home.
In the comics, Hershel Green is a former veterinarian who lives on a farm with his family and other survivors. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company spend quite a bit of time at the farm in the comics, though it’s doubtful the entire second season of the show will be set there. After all, it might work okay in the comics where you can stretch out a single story arc for dozens of issues, but watching the Grimes walk around a farm is probably not going to prove very conducive to the thriller aspect of the show for an entire season. Of course, I could be wrong.
As for the new castmembers, Scott Wilson is what you would call a “character actor”, and he certainly has the face for the role (above). Cohan (below) spent a season beguiling the Winchester boys on “Supernatural” before moving onto other things. She’s done recurring work on “The Vampire Diaries” and “Chuck”, and most recently, played the improbably named (but wickedly entertaining) September Jones in the direct-to-DVD sequel “Death Race 2”.
On Cohan’s casting, “The Walking Dead” producer Gale Anne Hurd says Steven Yuen is “very excited”. I’ll bet.
