Warner Bros. Begins the Elfquest

Written by Nix | July 9th, 2008 | 1 Comment |

Wendy and Richard Pini’s “Elfquest” is coming to the big screen — but as what? No one knows, not even Warner Bros., who will be fronting the money to bring the cult comic book series to a movie theater near you. To that end, they’ve given the thumbs up, or whatever it is elves use, to Rawson Thurber to write, direct, and produce the feature for them. They just, you know, don’t know how they’re going to do it yet. Hmm, you would think they would need to know this before Thurber sets off to write this thing, but hey, they’re a big movie studio, and I’m sitting in my mom’s attic typing this in my Spidey underoos, so whatever.

THR has more on these elves and their quest that we speak off:

The original comic, which the Pinis initially self-published starting in 1978, followed a tribe of elves known as the Wolfriders in their attempts to survive and link with other dispersed elves on an Earth-like planet with two moons while on the lookout for tribes of humans and trolls, both of which acted as allies and enemies.

The series — which at certain points in its history was published by both Marvel and DC Comics — attracted a more mature audience as it went along, with scenes of battles and sexuality that were intense for that time.

Wow. Scenes of intense sexuality involving elves. Sounds like the fantasies of every diehard Lord of the Rings fan!

Nice! Elfquest has all the elements to make a great film - complex characters, intense storylines, huge existing fan-base but with broader appeal, plus the sex and violence (which is very well done).
