Watch Out, Vamps! New Trailer for Paul Bettany’s Priest

Check out a new, theatrical trailer for Paul Bettany and Scott Stewart’s warrior priests vs. vampire movie “Priest”, based on the comic book of the same name. Like the duo’s previous collaboration, the angels vs. demons movie “Legion”, this one seems to be flying very low under the radar, which probably means I’ll enjoy the hell out of it. What can I say — Paul Bettany as a vampire-killing warrior priest is just way too cool of a premise to pass up.

Priest is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. Paul Bettany is Priest, a legendary warrior priest during the last Vampire War, who now lives in obscurity among the other human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities controlled by the Church. But when his 18-year-old niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires in the desolate wastelands outside, Priest breaks his sacred vows and ventures out to find her and seek vengeance upon those responsible, especially their brutal leader (Karl Urban). Priest is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, Hicks (Cam Gigandet), a local outpost sheriff, and Priestess (Maggie Q), a member of his former legion of vampire-killers who has otherworldly fighting skills.

Starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Stephen Moyer, Mädchen Amick, Christopher Plummer, Brad Dourif, Casey Pieretti, Josh Wingate and directed by Scott Stewart.

Staking May 13, 2011.

Source material is good, and Bettany is a great actor, and Stewart is a competent director. It looks good. I liked “Legion” but it was lacking and I think I’ll get what I wanted in this. It looks pretty epic. Also the look reminds me of “Judge Dredd,” not a bad thing at all as the set, background and costume design were the high points of that film.

  • Six Demon Bag

Fans of the of the comics have voiced their heavy criticism against the movie regarding changes related to the central storylines and it’s core characters. Primarily how the protagonist and antagonists in the film have been altered.

The film is set in an altered Earth, where vampires and humans have fought a war for centuries. But the book jumped from different time periods, from biblical to modern while the core of the story was set in the old west.
In the books, Ivan Isaacs was portrayed a priest that turned into a demon possessed undead creature after he witness members of the vatican killed the woman he loved, his adopted sister. In the film he’s a mortal priest vampire hunter searching for his niece.

The books had him face a multitude of enemies such as: criminals of the old west, demons, zombies, unnatural assassins from the vatican, fallen and mutant angels. The main antogonist was a fallen angel called Temozarela. There were no vampires in the books. However, The film’s antagonists are only vampires (similar to the video game DarkWatch) led by someone who was a priest called Black Hat.

They say it’s based off the books, but so far only the title has remained unchanged. This looks more like a story that was attached to the book just for the sake it would get a better chance of being made and get the money from Hollywood. Truly the story and characters could stand on it’s own without any connection to the comics.
