This is interesting. When Zack Snyder released his cast list for “Watchmen” a while back, I hadn’t noticed that no one was scheduled to play Moloch the Mystic (aka Edward Jacobi), the former villain turned pathetic middle aged has-been who is murdered at the beginning of the movie, thus setting the chain of events into motion. Now MTV’s movie blog reports that Matt Frewer, whose most famous part to date was the bodyless Max Headroom (although for my money he did his best work as a duplicitous time traveler in Star Trek: The Next Generation), is already shooting his scenes as Moloch. Frewer joins a cast that already includes Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, and Carla Gugino.
In the graphic novel, Moloch clashes with famous “masks” like Nite Owl, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan, before giving up his life of crime sometime before the action of the novel begins. Rehabilitated, the former vice lord moves to New York City, where he lives alone until his murder in 1985. His dead body is discovered by Rorschach, who is framed for Moloch’s death.
If you’re a Matt Frewer fan, show up early for the movie, because he’s going fast, kids.
