Weekend Box Office: Pandas Rule, Sandler Second

There were no real surprises at the box office over the weekend, as the Jack Black animated comedy “Kung Fu Panda” took the top spot, thanks to its family-friendly ways, while Adam Sandler scored big again with his dominant young male demographic, good enough for his “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” to land at second place with $40 million to “Panda’s” $60 million. Both films are in their first weekend, with the PG-rated “Panda” (strong cartoon panda violence?) opening in about 700 more screens than the PG-13 rated “Zohan”.

Meanwhile, Indiana Jones’ fourth outing cracked the whip and climbed back over last week’s #1, “Sex and the City”, which fell to #4 in its second week. In its third week of release, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” reasserted itself and leapfrogged “Sex” for #3 with $22.8 million to “Sex’s” $21.3 million.

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” has earned a domestic total of $253 in three weeks, while “Sex and the City” is poised to break the $100 million barrier after this weekend’s take — it now stands at $99 million for two weeks.

And in redundant “Speed Racer” news, in its fifth week at the box office, the movie fell out of the Top 10 completely. The Wachowski Brothers’ live-action cartoon came in at #13 with $370,000 over the weekend. Yikes.
