What is Marvel’s Item 47?

It’s the latest one-shot movie by Marvel, similar to last year’s Agent Coulson-centric “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Thor’s Hammer”, which was a prelude of sorts to last year’s “Thor”. This time around, it’s “Item 47”, and it’s a prologue to “The Avengers”, which means you’ll get the entire short with your copy of “The Avengers” DVD/Blu-ray coming out later this year on September 25, 2012. You’ll be able to just buy “The Avengers” by its little lonesome or splurge on a limited edition collector’s set that includes every Marvel movie since “Iron Man”.

So what’s this “Item 47”?

Directed by Marvel co-president Louis D’Esposito, the premise of Item 47 is that a not-so-ethical young couple (Party Down‘s Lizzy Caplan and Flags of Our Father‘s Jesse Bradford) recover one of the lost alien weapons and figure out how to make it work. Then, of course, they have to figure out what to do with it — and their solution is a life of crime.

S.H.I.E.L.D. agents played by Lost‘s man-in-black Titus Welliver, and Maximiliano Hernández (reprising his role as Sitwell from Thor and The Avengers) are assigned the task of stopping them and getting the weapon back.
