Whatever Happened to Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s The Courier? Oh, BTW, Here’s a Trailer.

Unfortunately it’s in German, but hey, it’s still your first and only look at the movie so that’s something. As for the film itself? That’s kind of a mystery, but given that a German (re: International) trailer has landed well before a U.S./English version, I think it’s safe to assume that the film will be headed straight-to-DVD/VOD in the States much later this year (or 2013), while getting a limited theatrical release overseas, where American-made action movies traditionally still have some muscle. This is all a little disappointing, as I was really looking forward to seeing The Comedian kicking ass on the big screen.

The Courier (2011) Movie PosterIn the film, Morgan plays a “specialist carrier” who is hired to deliver a mysterious case to the underworld’s most dangerous hitman. Things, of course, don’t quite go as planned, and before you know it, our hero is on the run from dangerous dudes with guns. Thankfully he apparently gets able assist from Josie Ho. Hey, when you have Josie Ho on your side, things are looking up.

I have to admit, it’s not nearly as slick as I had expected. It’s certainly nothing along the lines of the “Transporter” movies, that’s for sure. That franchise is the epitome of slick. Director Hany Abu-Assad (“Paradise Now”) seems to be going for a much more gritty feel. Hell, I don’t think Jeffrey Dean Morgan even gratuitously takes his shirt off even once. What’s that about?

Also starring Mark Margolis, “Inglourious Basterds'” Til Schweiger, Lili Taylor, Miguel Ferrer, David Jensen, Clyde Jones, Michael Arata, Tom Proctor, and everyone’s favorite goofball, Mickey Rourke.
