Will Sam Raimi Take a Trip Down the Yellow Brick Road to Oz?

Citing studio “insiders”, the Vulture blog reports that the great and powerful Sam Raimi has been offered the directing gig of Disney’s “Oz, The Great and Powerful”, a prequel to the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz” that would trace the origins of that man behind the curtain.

The site says Raimi has not responded yea or nay to the offer.

I suppose that decision will depend on how much he wants to make that “World of Warcraft” movie he has been attached to since last year, or if maybe he’s waiting for someone to offer him the “Hobbit” gig, which he’s wanted but didn’t get and, it can be argued, settled for “WoW” instead.

Robert Downey Jr. has been rumored for the lead in “Oz”, and Sam Mendes has been mentioned in the past as a possible director.
