There are two reasons why I am psyched about Will Smith’s upcoming “I am Legend”: It stars Will Smith, who I have been a fan of ever since “Ali”, and it’s based on the book of the same name by Richard Matheson, which I had read many moons ago and friggin loved. True, the movie has veered very far away from the book (Smith’s character, Neville, has gone from Everyman to Supersoldier, apparently, and they’re introducing a biological “explanation” for the vampirism as I hear it), but it’s still got those two things I want to see mixed together: Smith and “I am Legend” on the big screen. So any news on “I am Legend” is good news as far as I’m concerned. So what’s the good news?
According to Collider.com, who are really getting some good “inside baseball” movie stuff of late, the very first “I am Legend” trailer will be attached to Steven Soderbergh’s A-list extravaganza “Oceans 13”. I don’t plan to see “Ocean’s 13”, but hell, I might change my mind now! Then again, since the trailer will also show up online a day before (or around the same time) as “Ocean’s 13’s” opening, maybe not.
The plotline for “I am Legend” at IMDB.com really doesn’t tell you much, it’s basically a rewrite of Matheson’s novel, and doesn’t mention any of the new tweaks:
Robert Neville is the last man alive. He busies himself with preparing for a nightly attack from the rest of the world – all of which have transformed into blood-thirsty vampires.
The film will star Will Smith, Salli Richardson, Alice Braga, and Charlie Tahan as Neville’s former neighbor turned master of the vampires. Or maybe that character will get tweaked as well for the movie version.
The film is scheduled for a December 2007 release. Vampires on Christmas? Hell yeah!
