The cast for the upcoming 3D “Spider-Man” reboot is coming along nicely. Andrew Garfield is Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacey, Rhys Ifans as the villain Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard, and last week it came out that Martin Sheen and Sally Field could play Uncle Ben and Aunt May. While I didn’t give the film much credence initially, it felt like a lackluster rehash that didn’t need to happen, the more names they attach to the film, the more my interest is piqued.
One more name is also now rumored (emphasis on the “rumor” part) to be hovering around the production: Zooey Deschanel. Deschanel and “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb worked together on the indie hit “(500) Days of Summer”. Unnamed sources told Showbiz Spy that Webb is talking to the “Almost Famous” star about playing Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson’s sexy secretary who flirts with Peter Parker and generally makes him uncomfortable. Elizabeth Banks played the part in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” films.
“Betty was a minor character in the previous Spidey movies but Marc has big plans for her,” reveals a movie insider. “He wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey fits the bill perfectly. The role is hers if she wants it.”
In reality, would this be much more than a cameo, or perhaps a couple of scenes where Betty badgers Peter and makes him blush? Who knows if this will even happen, like I said, this is a rumor from an unnamed source, which just intrinsically sounds sketchy and brings to mind images of shadowy meetings with men wearing trench coats in underground parking structures. Deschanel has nice eyes, which certainly wouldn’t hurt anything.
