Willis And Schwarzenegger Will Have “Substantial” Roles In Expendables 2

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis

“The Expendables 2” is shaping up to be adolescent me’s cinematic wet dream. First, there are rumblings that both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris are joining the cast. As if that isn’t enough, Deadline reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger (I love that my spell check recognizes Schwarzenegger) and Bruce Willis, who both had cameos in the first film, will return, this time in “substantial” roles.

What does that mean? I don’t know. But I don’t care either. I’m a man of simple tastes, and if I get to see Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Willis onscreen together again, even though I doubt anything super awesome will happen, I’m going to giggle like a little girl. Hell, even though the first go round was a disappointment I still got giddy. Like I said, I’m not hard to impress.

This time around Simon West, who helmed “Con Air”—which I desperately love, despite my better judgment—is taking over the directing duties from Sylvester Stallone. Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Terry Crews, are also on board to return. Anybody heard anything about Randy Couture coming back? He’s retired from fighting, so I can’t imagine he’s got anything better to do. POTENTIAL SPOILER: Rumor has it that the death of Tool (Rourke), is the spark that ignites the action in “The Expendables 2”.

There’s no word on when production may begin. Schwarzenegger is already working on his first post-governor/post-sex scandal role, a part in Kim Ji-woon’s (“I Saw the Devil”) first English-language effort, “Last Stand”. Willis, in the meantime, is preparing to reprise his John McLane in “Die Hard 5”, as well as a “RED” sequel. However, the article does make it sound their increased participation in “The Expendables 2” is a pretty solid bet.

UPDATE: Now the Playlist is now confirming Norris and Van Damme’s involvement, as well as, get this John Travolta (?). And “The Expendables 2″ is apparently gearing up to begin filming in Bulgaria. Who knew?

I can imagine a story where Church had hired Mauser to do a job that resulted in Tool’s death, if not an actual assassination. Or maybe a story of dueling “private security firms” with Ross and Mauser’s teams trying to outdo and sabotage each over a job offer from Church a la “Midnight Run.” Maybe some of the new cast can be members of Mauser’s crew. Can’t wait, but I’m not going to miss Clayface Mickey Rourke because frankly, he kind of looks weird. And speaking of “Con-Air” (which is also a guilty pleasure), imagine if Nic Cage were in this thing…
