Writer/Director Mike Flanagan Invites You to Enter the World of Absentia

I’ve said it before, but I feel it’s worth saying again: It takes a lot to creep me out these days. As I’m getting older, I’m discovering that I’m becoming severely desensitized to the horror genre, particularly those endeavors that involve creepy ghosts standing behind unsuspecting human beings. That having been said, the trailer for Mike Flanagan’s eerie supernatural shocker “Absentia” skillfully managed to creep beneath my skeptical skin. The concept itself is pretty creepy — a woman begins seeing her dead husband around the house after declaring him “lost in absentia” — and Flanagan seems to be handling the material in a serious manner. It’s pretty effective stuff.

Here’s a full synopsis:

Tricia’s husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him ‘dead in absentia.’ Tricia is reluctant, always holding out hope, but Callie is practical and wants her to move on. As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house. As she begins to link it to other mysterious disappearances, it becomes clear that his presumed death might be anything but ‘natural.’ It seems that the ancient force at work in the tunnel might have set its sights on Callie and Tricia … and Tricia’s husband might be suffering a fate far worse than death in its grasp.
