Xander Cage’s “Death Scene” from xXx…

There’s good news and bad news for action heroes — the good news is that, when their star begins to fade just a little bit (or in the case of Seagal and Van Damme, gets snuffed out by the cruelties of life and, in Seagal’s case, bags and bags of Cheetos), they can always return to the roles that made them famous. The bad news? Well, they’re going backwards, not forward, and you can only do that for so long until even your diehard fans start to think, “Wow, maybe my time could be better spent elsewhere besides watching Rocky fight a mountain bear in ‘Rocky 20’…” Such is the state of Vin Diesel’s career. He’s now returned to two movie franchies — the “Fast and Furious” films, and now there is word he may be heading back to the “xXx” factory, which is funny, considering that he was killed off to make way for Ice Cube.

Wow. I don’t know what’s more of an insult — that the filmmakers shot this crappy 4-minute “bridging sequence” to explain Cage’s death, or that the best they could up with to replace Diesel was Ice Cube. If I was Diesel, I’d be kind of, you know, insulted.

/Film reader Karel R alerted me to this short film titled xXx: The Death of Xander Cage, which was apparently a special feature on the director’s cut DVD. It’s almost unbelievable. The film is supposed to tie up loose ends between the first and second films, and explain how Vin Diesel’s character met his ultimate demise. The funniest part is the whole thing was shot without Diesel’s involvement.

So how are they going to explain this “death scene” when Vin Diesel returns to the “xXx” franchise with “xXx: The Death of Xander Cage”? They’ll probably ignore it. This is, after all, just an add-on for the DVD.

And hey, if the “Highlander” people can make the immortals aliens from the planet ThisIsSuchaBadIdea, I can guy that Cage never died.
