Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker star in the direct-to-DVD actioner “Freelancers”, which makes it sound like the film is about a bunch of mercenaries or parkour kids or something, but is actually a crime film about a bunch of crooked NYPD cops led by De Niro. Whitaker plays a totally coked up Denzel Washington-type, with Fiddy in the Ethan Hawke ala “Training Day” role. Looks interesting, or at least, a lot more interesting than some of the direct-to-DVD mess that Mr. Cent has released in recent years. Check out a Red Band trailer for the film below.
The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father’s former partner and a team of rogue cops. His new boss, Sarcone, will see if he has what it takes to be rogue through many trials and tribulations of loyalty, trust and respect. When the truth about his father’s death is revealed revenge takes him over and he won’t stop until justice has been truly served.
Dana Delaney also co-stars, though she looks incredibly out of place among De Niro, the aforementioned coked up Forest Whitaker, and a gun-toting Fiddy Cent. The film is directed by Jessy Terrero, though its boasts as being from “a producer of ‘Righteous Kill’ and ‘Street Kings'”. What, just one producer?
The film lands on DVD/Blu-ray August 21st courtesy of Lionsgate.
