Your First Look at Russell Crowe as Jor-El in Man of Steel

Jor-El Comic BookHey, kids, wanna see what Russell Crowe as Superman’s biological daddy Jor-El looks like two years before the film opens? If you answered No, then good for you. But if you answered Yes, then go learn some self-control — and take a gander at the set image of Crowe in full Jor-El costume on the film’s Vancouver set below. No looks at Ayelet Zurer, Superman’s native mom yet, who recently replaced Julia Ormond in the cast.

Crowe joins Marlon Brando, Terence Stamp, and Julian Sands as people who have played Superman’s pops in various incarnations of the character’s existence over the years.

Russell co-stars with Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Michael Shannon as bad guy Zod, along with Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, and Harry Lennix.

The Zack Snyder-directed reboot soars back onto the big screen on June 14, 2013, a whopping two years away.

two things i notice, is that the costume or is Russel getting a little soft around the middle(arent we all) but it also looks like the pristine krypton weve seen for years is gone..

    Looks good!!. Explain Superman’s custom!.

I mean, it looks a bit Lord of the Rings but I;m not against it.

    I WANT A TRAILER!!!!!!

Here’s a couple of more pics for you:

Seems to be that Kypton is also a Marlboro world.

  • LionHeart

I have to say I quite like it personally, but I can see why others might not.

  • Juggernaut

I’m of two minds when it comes to this pic. I’m kind of happy that Snyder is going in a different direction with the styles and asthetics of the costumes. It puts some much needed distance between his movieand the Donner/Singer films. I’m also not entirely sold on the new costumes and looks. Maybe he’ll make Krypton a bit of a grittier world than the normal, boring, super-pristine eutopia that we’re used to. It could be one of many shake ups that this character and franchise so desperately need.

    • Dedpool

I real-life it just for the first reason you mention alone. The look is completely different than any we’ve seen before in both film and comics for Jor-El and Kryptonian dress. It also gives an idea of where the Superman suit gets it’s influence. May be a military suit after all, and what Jor-El is wearing is ceremonial, or polictical. His place as a scientist may give him a spot ok a council.

      • Juggernaut

I could see that. This could be a new take on the Ceremonial garb akin to the black suit that Brando wore when bannishing Zod, Ursa and Non to the Phantom Zone in the beginning of the first Donner film. He may have different clothing before that like the white science outfit in the Donner films. Overall I like the ties to the suit. The one thing that I would have liked to have seen is a cleaner, more polished hair and beard style. He almost looks like a warrior in the pic. Who knows, maybe Snyder decided to change Jor-El’s backstory a bit?

        • Dedpool

If anything he may make him both warrior and scientist. What if Krypton were portrayed as a military culture with advanced science, along the lines of the revelations in “New Krypton” storyline? And who knows Jor-El could’ve just spent the last several days building a certain ship.

That would be a cool way to go! Man there are so many questions that are coming to me now.

          • Dedpool

I know right! In the meantime I suggest you pick up the graphic novel “Superman: Earth One” it was a great new twist on the story and is setting up it’s own continuity, kind of an “Ultimate” take on the world. “Batman: Earth One” comes out this year and a second volume of Superman is being worked on.

Is either that or Jor-El is just dressed but no make-up yet. Remember this is not an official production photo.

      • Dominique Hatcher

Looking at “SMALLVILLE” and some of the comics, the Kryptonians come across as a highly militarized culture, albeit not a Federated, Robert Heinlein type. And Jor-El always struck me as a military-scientist so his outfit here makes total sense. I too am glad that Snyder is going a different way…..I was, quite frankly, tired of always seeing Jor-El in glowing bright robes. Now I can’t wait to see a full pic of Zod!!!! KNEEL SON OF JOR-EL!!!!

        • Juggernaut

Yeah it makes sense. Honestly, the first time I saw Superman The Movie I was probably five years old and the ultra bright white robes and crystal land scpaes was awesome. That being said it is time for a change. The crystals, while a part of Superman mythos is done to death. I’d much rather a LOTR or COTT look to Krypton and the Kryptonian characters which is what it looks like they’re doing. I’m really hoping that Zod meets my expectations. I wasn’t 100% on board with him as the villain for this movie, mostly because, like the crystal city, it has been done so many times. However, Michael Shannon is a really good actor and may be able to do something new. Can’t wait for more info!
