A little hint about what might have been the origins of this creature came in one scene where the survivors were standing in an alley (I know, not very specific). There is a good shot of a drum in the background to the left in the alley with a bright yellow biohazard sign on it. The drum has a trail of fluid running accross the alley from it (maybe heading to a storm drain). I never saw anything about slusho (whatever that is), a satellite, or drilling at sea, but then I didn't watch all the way through the credits either. Just saw the movie from a DVD rip. Very good CGI -- it doesn't look fake at all. The monsters were HUGE. Doesn't look anything like the sketches you can Google online.
