Zac Efron is … Namor, The Sub-mariner?

The former “High School Musical” star who has been making a tear of it lately in a variety of teen-friendly movies, is up for the role of Marvel superhero Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Or at least, the job’s his if he wants it. That’s according to Showbiz Spy, who quotes an unnamed “movie insider” as saying:

Zac is seen as perfect for the role. He can fit the role physically and has the acting skill necessary and he has a fanbase to help make the movie a hit. Namor is an unusual character but the underwater aspect is something producers are very excited to be putting onto the big screen.

Hunh.

Zac Efron as the pointy-eared, Marvel Comics version of Aquaman? I guess. The kid has the body for it, that’s for sure, but is Namor supposed to be so young? In all the incarnations of the character I’ve seen, he’s always been 30-ish and a sour puss.

Here’s bit more on the character thanks to our pals at Wikipedia:

The mutant son of a human sea captain and of a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor possesses the super-strength and aquatic abilities of the “Homo mermanus” race, as well as the mutant ability of flight, along with other superhuman powers. Through the years, he has been alternately portrayed as a good-natured but short-fused superhero, or a hostile invader seeking vengeance for perceived wrongs that misguided surface-dwellers committed against his kingdom.

So, Efron as Namor?

Or, the better question, why even make a Namor movie in the first place? The character has been on the live-action block for a while now, and as recently as 2009 there were talks of Jonathan Moscow directing. Surely, there are plenty of other Marvel characters to bring to the big screen first? Then again, this is one way to get girls into the theaters — a shirtless Zac Efron.

Thanks to Josh for the heads up.

    I…what?
Also, how is Namor ahead of Dr. Strange for a movie? >_<

Cause there should be lots of boob shots in it. Namor keeps a harem of mermaids.

        Touche.

I like the character of Namor. I also have nothing against Efron. But Zac Efron AS Namor?!?!?!
Ugh. I’ve always envisioned Namor to be exactly as you described him above, older and more of a dick! Lol. I get that they went younger with Captain AMerica and Thor. Although, both of those guys are in their 30’s. I would think that they’d cast someone a bit closer in age to RDJ.
My front runners have always been Justin Theroux (Mullholand Drive, American Pshyco), who also helped pen Ironman and Ironman 2, so he has an in…) and Dominic West (300, The Wire) or Adrien Brody (Predators, Splice) but Zac Efron??? Man I hope that this rumor doesn’t pan out.

      that’s funny!

Who cares. As long as Joe Manganiello is cast as Hercules the Prince of Power!

    • Juggernaut

Good choice! I was saving Mangianiello for Colossus but he’d be a really good Herc! He has the look, physicality and humor to pull off the part. I always had Kevin Durand (XMOW, Smokin’ Aces) in mind.

No, the man for the job is and will always be: Keanu Reeves.

Well Marvel just put out a Namor comic a lil while back that focussed on a young Namor. In fact the fact that everyone automatically thinks of Namor as in his 30s says something. Namor’s early life has only been touched a few times. Starting the movies with him younf actually allows them to tell new stories with the characters and not bog him down with connections to the Marvel U. A cameo here and areference there is all we need for now. With a sequel you can tie him into the Marvel U with a flash back to WWII that we didn’t see in Cap or something to that effect. All that said they shoulda gone with someone a lil bit older and with more bass.

Okay. That makes sense. However, I’d still like an actor with a bit edgier persona and look of douchebaggery!

Liam Hemsworth. Saw him in “Triangle” big dude, decent acting and has a good bit of arrogance in his look. Or Taylor Kitch (sp?)

        Sent on the go.

        • Juggernaut

Nah. I can’t think of anyone right now on the younger side of the age spectrum. Namor has been characterized differently by different artists and writers but I was always partial to the “shit don’t stink” ruler of Atlantis with the wirey build and widow’s peak myself. Like I said, I’d like an older take but if that’s not an option I’d still like that look in the film.

        • Juggernaut

I got it! Ian Sommerhalder (Lost, The Vampire Diaries)! He’s be perfect! He has the right facial features, physical build and that air of self importance and arrogance that Namor exudes. I can’t think of another young actor better suited for the role.

He’d work. Not exactly young but he’d work. Not saying I’m old but he’s the same age as me and I’m not in my 20s.

            Sent on the go.

          • Juggernaut

He’s the same age as me too! Lol. But realistically he isn’t old??? He’s in the same age range as Hemsworth and Evans too. I also like Eric Bana and Ty Burell. Both have already played other Marvel chracters but they’d be good in the role. Even Orlando Bloom would be a good choice. All three could pull of the role in my opinion.

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Liam Hemsworth is 21 or so the oldest. He was born in 1990. Chris is older. Bloom has the look and the voice but he’d need to bulk up just a little but I like him in the role. Its between he and the younger Hemsworth brother for me.

            Sent on the go.

I can see orlando bloom as namor. Of all the xmen, colossus was my favorite. He never got enough story time, but he was there backbone. i’m not sure he’d ever lead a movie, but would love to see more of him in general.

Exactly. Namor is long lean and wirey. He doesn’t need to be as big as Evans and Hemsworth. There are so many other actors out there that I can’t believe they would choose Zac Efron.
