The former “High School Musical” star who has been making a tear of it lately in a variety of teen-friendly movies, is up for the role of Marvel superhero Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Or at least, the job’s his if he wants it. That’s according to Showbiz Spy, who quotes an unnamed “movie insider” as saying:
Zac is seen as perfect for the role. He can fit the role physically and has the acting skill necessary and he has a fanbase to help make the movie a hit. Namor is an unusual character but the underwater aspect is something producers are very excited to be putting onto the big screen.
Zac Efron as the pointy-eared, Marvel Comics version of Aquaman? I guess. The kid has the body for it, that’s for sure, but is Namor supposed to be so young? In all the incarnations of the character I’ve seen, he’s always been 30-ish and a sour puss.
Here’s bit more on the character thanks to our pals at Wikipedia:
The mutant son of a human sea captain and of a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor possesses the super-strength and aquatic abilities of the “Homo mermanus” race, as well as the mutant ability of flight, along with other superhuman powers. Through the years, he has been alternately portrayed as a good-natured but short-fused superhero, or a hostile invader seeking vengeance for perceived wrongs that misguided surface-dwellers committed against his kingdom.
So, Efron as Namor?
Or, the better question, why even make a Namor movie in the first place? The character has been on the live-action block for a while now, and as recently as 2009 there were talks of Jonathan Moscow directing. Surely, there are plenty of other Marvel characters to bring to the big screen first? Then again, this is one way to get girls into the theaters — a shirtless Zac Efron.
Thanks to Josh for the heads up.
