Before he swash-buckled his way into women’s hearts everywhere as Prince Charming on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”, Josh Dallas was Frandral in Marvel’s big-budget “Thor” movie. Though you might not have recognized him. He was sporting some pretty funky facial hair, after all, and he actually looked more like Cary Elwes circa “The Princess Bride” than, well, the clean-shaven Josh Dallas that now appears weekly on “Once”.
Unfortunately for Dallas, it’s that same commitment to “Once Upon a Time” that will be keeping him from reprising Frandral in “Thor 2”, and as a result Marvel has now gone to geek favorite Zachary Levi (of “Chuck” fame) to replace him. It’s certainly kismet, especially since Levi was up for Frandral the first time around, but had to withdraw because of commitments to his own TV show. Go figure, right?
Before you know it, “Thor 2” will be shooting, with production set to begin sometime this July under director Alan Taylor, who is taking over for Kenneth Branagh, who decided against returning for the sequel. Taylor is a veteran TV director, with credits on “Game of Thrones”, “Bored to Death”, and “Mad Men”.
Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor, along with Tom Hiddleston as his evil stepbrother Loki, and Anthony Hopkins as their pop, Odin. Natalie Portman is also expected back. No word how many of the Warriors Three (of which Frandral is a member) will also return, or if one or two of them will also be swapped. Mads Mikkelsen was previously added to the cast as the sequel’s new villain.
“Thor 2” saves the world again in 2013.
