Zack Snyder’s Superman Reboot Gets an Official Title, Michael Shannon as Zod

Well it’s official: Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot will officially be called “Man of Steel” (sans the “The”, apparently), and “Boardwalk Empire’s” Michael Shannon has landed the role of General Zod, thus putting to bed rumors that Zod WON’T be in the movie. Yes, kids, Superman will most certainly have to deal with someone his equal but, er, without the fashion sense. Or is that with the fashion sense? I guess that depends on what you think of Supe’s blue-and-red ensemble.

Press release ahoy:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Superman film, titled “Man of Steel.”

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire,” from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’, “Take Shelter,” from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

“Man of Steel” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Zack Snyder is directing, and Henry Cavill is starring as the new Man of Steel, with Amy Adams recently cast as Lois Lane.

Look for Supes to go up, up, and away again in 2012.

wow – i like that guy but he is no ZOD — i was expecting vigo mortesen

  • LedBalloon

Awesome! Thats way a better casting than Viggo Mortensen. In fact, thats the best casting news of the whole Superman reboot yet. Putting Viggo mortensen on antother fantasy movie isn’t really that big of stretch being that he is Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings, and that probably his most memorable role to date. No, that wouldn’t work Nolan, but Michael Shannon that’s something new. I’s kinda like Heath Ledger as the Joker no one thought that was a good idea at first. And he turned out the performance of a lifetime. So, I think Christopher Nolan knows a thing or two when it comes to casting movies. Zack Snyder also is a badass when it comes to casting decisions he was the one who made Gerard Buttler a star and put Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen. So, Michael Shannon will probably blow us away as General Zod and whoever else they cast as his co-villains. Right on!

i would have liked Kevin Durand as ZOD

I like it! Michael Shannon is a great actor and one of my favorites. I had him pegged for Ulysses Klaw in a Black Panther film myself but he’ll be a cool Zod. I’m interested in how they’ll portray Zod. Will he be the Terrence Stamp version? Cool, calculating insurgent. Or the militant, Alpha male spin that Callum Blue did in Smallville? Maybe something different completely. Any way they cut it I’ll be there front and center on opening night.

I’m hella down with Michael Shannon as Zod. Superman’s enemy will finally be a as tall if not taller than him.

I hope there will be another secret villain in this, we’ve seen Zod already. Couldn’t we at least have gotten Parasite or somebody?! At least Nolan cast two previously unused characters in Batman Begins(Ras Al Ghul & Scarecrow). I’m not excited about this.

    • Juggernaut

Another villain would be cool. I was hoping for an unused villain as well. Batman Begins is the formula that should have been followed. Like you said use one or two characters who haven’t been done. Then at the end introduse Lex or Zod. I’m hoping this turns out well and trying to be optomistic. Now that Zod and most of the rest of the cast has been filled out, I’m waiting for the decisions on Lex and wondering if Ursa and Non make it into the film too.

Though I was heistant about getting Zod as the villain again, it was much the same feeling I got when Joker was announced for TDK. We’d already seen the Joker,a dn I didn’tthink there was much more you could do with the character. Obviously I was wrong. And though we’ve gotten two different versions of the character so far I think this Zod will be even more different. If they’re going the “Birthright” route, but changing it up a bit, i can see them playing him a a cross between the two versions on screen and his most recent comic incarnation. I think they should do a bit of “Superman: Earth One” and have Krypton have actually been destroyed by someone instead of the planet just exploding (only hinted at it in comic but I think it was Brainiac) and someone had a hand in it. Let it be Zod that had a hand in it, as he knew he couldn’t take over so he decided to let it be destroyed but he and his mist trusted advisors (Ursa and Non) escaped with the help of Brainiac. They’re now searching for the last Kryptonian as they have realized that they get powers near yellow suns, and want to team up and stop Brainiac and rule the universe together. I’d have him try to appeal to Kal-El’s curiostiy about his home world, almost act as if he is a true friend but then he’d start trying to take the planet over, putting Kal-El at odds with him. He doesn’t know his full background and people aren’t sure what to think of him, then Zod shows up and they really don’t know what to think. Ursa and Non would be off planet waiting for Zod’s signal. Long story short, movie would end with Zod meeting Luthor and telling him everything, a battle between Superman and Zod. Zod’s defeat would end in him trying to destroy the planet with some device. Superman wins heart of people, but will now have Luthor trying to publicly dishonor him and secretly working with Ursa and Non towards revenge. But also Brainiac was alerted to Earth and the last Kryptonians. That’d set up 2 and 3.

in as much i would have prefered another supervillain unlike those already cast in previous versions..like a bizarro who is manipulated by lex to see the demise of superman bringing the cracked mirrored version of bizarro/doomsday.. against earths greatest superhero .. and we all know bizarro likes to destroy things at will and then the true man of steal has to pinned bizarro with some humongus steel to chain him in and send him into the sun or so the story ends .. also i like how the first movie versions were .. they gave u an idea that superman continues or perhaps to introduce the upcoming villain as the superman man of steel ends so die hard fans can have their say for the upcoming one .. does that sound good for the man of steel plot story.. i am eager to see brainiac taking over the earths techno.. in seconds cause he so superior and of course the last sup movie should end with no other than DARK SIDE
