Oh look, the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” gangs all back. (Well, except for Chow Yun Fat. At least, for now…)
EW reports that Zhang Ziyi, who shot to fame in Ang Lee’s 2000 film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” is now in talks with the producers of the upcoming sequel, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny” to reprise her role of rebellious kung fu prodigy Jen.
Unfortunately it won’t be a really big role. We’re told that Jen will only appear in “flashbacks to explain what happened to her character.” Bummer. Then again, I guess a little Zhang Ziyi back in the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” universe is better than none, right?
Michelle Yeoh will play the sequel’s female lead, reprising the role of Yu Shu Lien, while Donnie Yen will co-star opposite her as the deadly Silent Wolf. Well, I don’t know if Silent Wolf is really deadly, but with a name like “Silent Wolf”, I doubt if he’ll be serving hot buns to characters in the movie.
With Jen set to return in flashbacks, what’s to prevent Chow Yun Fat’s Li Mu Bai from doing the same? Not a damn thing, as far as I know. Fingers crossed!
It’s interesting that a Western news outlet like EW is reporting this news, which just goes to show you how influential the Ang Lee film continues to be 13 years later. It not only brought wire-fu to mainstream audiences, but proves, I think, that kung fu can be just as brilliantly acted as any gritty art house drama.
The film, set to be directed by legendary martial arts action choreographer and director Yuen Woo-ping, will begin production in March of next year.
Zhang Ziyi can next be seen in Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmaster” (which, coincidentally, also counts her “CTHD” co-star Chen Chang among the cast). In the film, Ziyi kicks so much ass, they should have just made the entire movie about her character. No, seriously. Check out a pair of clips from that movie.
