No doubt “inspired” by the runaway success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead”, currently breaking cable records all over the joint, FOX and Sony Pictures Television are developing their own zombie show, this one a half-hour TV series version the hit movie “Zombieland”, with original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick currently adapting their movie for a TV series format.
But if you’re hoping for something along the lines of “The Walking Dead” — that is, uber serious, somber, and downright awesome — you might be in for a letdown. The “Zombieland” TV series is being described as a “half-hour comedy”, which makes sense since the movie itself was always more comedy than horror, with perhaps a little bit of horror towards the end there when you didn’t know who would survive and who wouldn’t. But honestly, were you ever really scared once? Probably not.
Zombies are definitely in now, with a slew of big-budget Hollywood films on the way, TV shows galore, and even a heavy presence on the web. Remember the days when only wannabe film students with cameras, too much time, and too many willing friends made zombie movies? Oh my, have times changed…
Look for “Zombieland” the TV series sometime next year, possibly in 2013.
As for “Zombieland 2”, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. While Reese and Wernick have already finished the script, there have been no real movement on the sequel. The first film was a surprise hit, earning over $100 million from a $23 million dollar budget. It’s also done well on DVD with another $30 million in U.S. DVD sales alone. Then again, the director and its stars have moved on to bigger and better things, with both Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg in hot demand. Back in 2009, you probably never even heard of either actors.
